Jeremy Scahill on Crypto for Journalists, ‘Luddites’

As part of his answer to a question from the audience last night at his appearance at the Free Library, regarding the recent revelations of the DoJ’s eavesdropping on the AP and the war against journalists writ large, Jeremy Scahill talked about the effect it has had on journalists’ and sources’ willingness to create electronic records of their sensitive communications.

He said “I used to use OTR and one time pads and all that, and [an acquaintance in the NSA] told me they have all that cracked. We’d almost have to be Luddites now to leave a digital footprint.”

I don’t believe Mr. Scahill meant to represent himself as an expert in cryptography.

(read and go see Dirty Wars).
